LAYANA CHROMOLITHOGRAPH SERIES
JOSE or LUIS?
JOSE or LUIS?
This popular series featuring classical artwork reproduced in rolling paper booklets has been the victim of a long running misunderstanding. These have been overwhelmingly attributed to Luis Layana of Valencia. This confusion may stem from the rarity of complete booklets of these.
Most all have had the papers removed with only the artwork remaining. As can be seen in this complete example, the manufacturer is not Luis, but Jose.

It is not known how many examples are included in the series, but none of them were made by Luis. Not only does Jose's name appear on the interior, but his signature is also on the bottom flap of every cover in this series. Hopefully, this will put to rest any confusion regarding the true creator of these booklets.
I wondered upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Thanks for sharing. I hope you post again soon.
